 Benefits to gain from your CTFA Membership

  • The CTFA monitors and keeps Members updated on the Self Regulatory Control of cosmetics.
  • The CTFA provides technical expertise and advice on ingredients, labelling, packaging and product claims.
  • The CTFA publishes and distributes the Cosmetic Compendium with all the Codes of Practice and requirements for composition, labelling, safety and advertising of cosmetic products in South Africa The CTFA provides the means for dissemination of information on standards set up by working groups/committees. These working groups/committees consist of cosmetic industry experts.
  • The CTFA extends invitations to Members for seminars, conferences, workshops, information, days, breakfasts, lectures or talks.
  • The CTFA liaises with Government, The Department of Health and the South African Bureau of Standards on product, raw material and packaging regulations.
  • The CTFA liaises with the South African Revenue Services and Customs and Excise on ad valorem excise duty. Through extensive negotiations by The CTFA ad valorem was reduced from 37.5% to 15% in 1997 – then to 10% a year later and 2.5% in 2000.
  • The CTFA liaises with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa.
  • The CTFA maintains relationships with and makes representations to the appropriate South African and relevant international governments, legislative or other regulatory bodies, Chambers of Commerce or trade associations with regard to matters affecting the interests of the industry.
  • The CTFA is a member of Colipa (Cosmetics Europe, the Personal Care Association) and has representation on the ISO Cosmetics Committee.
  • The CTFA assists exporters with the issuing of Certificates of Free Sale.

Certificates of Free Sale

Companies exporting personal care products from South Africa are often asked for by foreign customers or overseas government departments to supply certification relating to the products being shipped.

These certificates are required in a growing number of countries that need assurance that products exported from South Africa are the same as products that are sold in the local South African market, presumably meeting all Regulations and Standards that assure consumer safety requirements.

Membership Conditions

  • Application Forms are completed by joining companies and the information is captured on the CTFA data base. New Members have a once-off registration fee.
  • Subscriptions are invoiced according to Company turnover categories.
  • Membership runs a calendar year, valid from January to December.
  • Renewal notices are sent out annually in October/November for companies to update their information in the event of turnover changes, management changes, telephone numbers, contacts, etc.
  • In the case of broken membership, a returning member will be escalated to Executive Council level for consideration.
  • Members are required to advise the CTFA in writing of their intention to resign and cancel their Membership. The accepted resignation notice period being 12 months.
